i tried out very briefly google documents for xls. it does not translate xls sheets perfectly which is pretty annoying if you've spent a lot of time working on getting your sheet exactly. which i have. also, it doesn't show your formula at the top which is something i use quite a bit. so, for free stuff, it's probably not bad, but there is def. some funcationality that is lost in translation. as much as i dislike the ubiquitousness of microsoft, excel is a pretty good program.
I think i'm just a control freak and i don't like it when programs do funky things to my files.

2.0 contest
wow, there is so much web 2.0 content! and i've only heard of like a fourth of the sites. but from what i've heard, i agree, except for like pbwiki being second place of best wiki hosting. b/c we tested it and it's unstable. like really really unstable and we were losing data and formatting and if you're going to spend the time making a wiki you sure don't want to be losing info.
also, library thing which we're currently using is only third on books. lulu is number 1 so i'm going to check that out. oh, lulu has nothing to do with making a catalog of your books...it's for like publishing your books which is not what i want. frankly, i want a free program for me to put my marc records in.

second life
apparently i can't install second life on the computer here at the hunt branch (i have to be an administrator for that function!)...and i don't really want to install it on my computer at home. so, i guess i won't be doing that aspect this week.
some of my favorite dance scenes from tv
maybe i just really want to be able to do awesome retro-90s dancing...

wikis and social networks
having had some experience already with "social networking" websites such as myspace, facebook, linkedin, etc etc, i have already some conclusions about them. they are a lot of work. if you want to actually keep them updated and all that, it takes a lot of time and effort. and i don't even read my friends pages. like ever! i have friends that devote hours to reading all of their 200 friend's blogs. and i'm like, dude, i don't have time for that kind of stuff. i barely have time to post original information to my own blog. and certainly a social networking site is no substitute for an honest to goodness real life friend. i update my myspace page like once every couple of months. if i have spare time i read and fill out surveys that used to be the reserve of spammy type emails that ask you what color your toothbrush is, and what's the name of your pet, but those are just time killers and primarily targeted towards teens, b/c they also ask stuff like "who's your crush?" or "what do you want to be when you grow up?"
wikis on the other hand are think are great. i already kinda blogged about this on the library sfp blog but i like the egalitarian nature of the wikipedia. i mean, technically if something could only be created by experts, then i couldn't contribute b/c i'm not an expert in anything...i'm a dabbler. but i think i have knowledge that might be useful to other people. and certainly i'm qualified to fix typos which is what i usually do. there are the occasional trolls who like the vandalize or whatnot but trolls exist in all arenas and you just have to deal with them.

web 2.0
i think that a library blog would be useful. i know that maureen has expressed an interest in starting one so that we can keep up on library info, and then maybe we wouldn't have to have so many darn emails running around! the beauty about blogs is that you can check them when you want and if you don't want to read an entry, then don't. this is how i keep up with my friends.
anyhow, i've already used flickr for some library projects where i needed pictures which is cool b/c they aren't copywritten photos.

tag!
while the idea of tags is good, i think that tags are misused by the public. or maybe this is the cataloger in me. we need controlled vocabulary!! :P

library thing
i thought i already had an account with library thing. but anyhow, i made a new one and i added all the books i had from only two authors, shannon hale and diana wynne jones. i'm tempted to add more but i shouldn't neglect my dog any longer. i don't like how you can't organise alphabetically...as far as i can tell anyhow. nevermind...yes you can organize by author, in list form, click author and then go to cover form.
Shirley's books
man they say you don't need to know MARC in order to catalog but i like cataloging! typing in an isbn is too easy...

generated images version 2.0
b/c my old generated image went kaput, i have created a new one. i <3 stephen colbert.
adding images to a blog
in case people need help, I'll put up easy directions.
basically you want to type this
img src ="file location of the thing you want to show, usually ends with a .jpg or .bmp or something like that"
except you need to surround it with < and >. i'd do an example but then it thinks i'm trying to really add a picture and not just typing text.
you can always look at my View/Page source and see the code too. or you can ask me.

flickr
at first i was tricked b/c i went to flicker, not flickr and it was some weird page. i've used flickr a little bit when i was looking for pictures of card catalogs for a project for the library. at that time, most of the pictures were very artsy, too artsy for our purposes, but i've just created an account on flickr and put up a picture of me dog, mal. i think i'm going to put all my pictures of mal up on flickr b/c the company i'm using currently (snapfish) wants me to buy something in order to keep my account active and i'm sooo not into that. so, dude, free picture hosting! w00t!
i find that searching tags and such work out pretty well.

I <3 IGs!
look how pretty this one is!
I think this is a mighty fine looking dog. Almost as fine as mine. :)
Mal is so obviously not a pure bred italian greyhound.

welcome to me blog!
how exciting, another blog to post in! woot!
isn't this a pretty blog?
So far, the SFP has been ok. I am highly looking forward to pizza tomorrow and I'm having fun working with my teammates. (perhaps in this order...I do love food.) I can't wait til we get to play with more things--if I have time, I plan on playing with my bloglines account more and add some more feeds to it. And even though I've very attached to my LiveJournal account, this blogger account is much prettier... (tempted to switch).
